PIGGAREP is a five year regional project, which consists of 11 Pacific Island countries (PIC) is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Each PIC is given a budget of USD360, 000 to undertake “software based” renewable based activities that contribute to the overall objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

An Inception workshop was held in Samoa in November 2007 to kick start this project and to finalize each PIC allocation.
The PIGGAREP project is being run for five years from 2008 – 2012. The Government of Fiji is undertaking the following PIGGAREP activities in 2008:-

  • Renewable energy resources assessments
  • Detailed designing of hydro & wind (hybrid with diesel) projects
  • Renewable Energy Database
  • Establishment of the Biogas Market
  • Holistic training provided to all those that are involved in renewable energy developments, including rural communities
  • Renewable Energy Advocacy Programme
  • Establishment of a Renewable Energy Information Center
